How to Setup Double Backdrops

Step 1: Gather Your Supplies

Start by collecting the following items:

  • Fabric: Choose two coordinating materials—one for the foundation and a different fabric color for the front valance.
  • Pipe and Drape Equipment: This includes base plates, uprights, crossbars, and valance hangers to complete your backdrop frame.
  • Fastening Tools: Use zip ties or pipe cleaners to keep the fabric in place.
  • Basic Tools: Scissors & a measuring tape to determine the right location & length.
  • Cleanup Supplies: Ensure your floor is clean so static electricity doesn’t make fuzzies cling to the fabric.

Step 2: Measure and Set Up the Framework

Before you start hanging drapes, we recommend measuring your space to check your backdrop fits and doesn’t obstruct any doorways or walkways.

  1. Place Base Plates: Position them in the desired location for stability.
  2. Secure Uprights: Slip your uprights over the base plate ferrules.
  3. Attach Crossbars: This is where you will hang your fabric.

Step 3: Hang the First Layer

Now it’s time to start draping!

  1. Choose Your First Fabric: This will be your background layer. Select a color that matches your theme.
  2. Hang the Fabric: Drape it over the crossbars, ensuring it hangs symmetrically on both ends and touches the ground for a smooth look.
  3. Pleat the Fabric: Overlap and evenly space the fabric on the crossbar so that there are ripples or pleats.

Step 4: Add the Second Layer

Once the first layer is hung, it’s time to add the second layer.

  1. Valance Hangers & Crossbar: Slide a valance hanger into the front of each upright, and connect crossbars between every valance hanger.
  2. Select a Complementary Fabric: Choose a fabric color that will be used for your front valance.
  3. Drape Fabric Over the 2nd Crossbar: Adjust the length to suit your style, pleats evenly across
  4. Secure the Second Layer: Center & overlap the 2 middle pieces of fabric & keep it in place with a zip tie.

Step 5: Finishing Touches

With both layers in place, it’s time for the last few steps!

  1. Raise Your Backdrop: Raise uprights in sections little by little until your backdrop is to your height preference.
  2. Swag Fabric to the Sides: Pull the left 2 and right 2 pieces of drapery towards each upright and keep it in place with pipe cleaners.
  3. Tidy Up: Inspect the fabric for similar height & fullness. Consider rolling or folding edges for a neat finish.
  4. Lighting Setup: Add 2 wireless uplights for every 10 feet of backdrop. Soft lighting makes a cozy vibe, while bright lights are more dramatic.

More Double Backdrop Ideas

  • Color Blocking: Combine bold colors for a striking effect. Imagine a rich navy backdrop with a bright yellow overlay—talk about eye-catching!
  • Textured Fabrics: Pair a sleek satin foundation with a delicate chiffon or lace top to achieve an elegant look.
  • Prints and Patterns: Don’t hesitate to incorporate prints! A geometric pattern on top of a solid color makes traditional backdrops stand out more.
  • Floral Accents: Intertwine flower garlands or eucalyptus vines with your draping for a natural touch.
  • Interactive Elements: Consider adding decorations or banners, such as a custom neon sign or fun photo booth props for guests to enjoy.
